Is MangaDex safe? The official site, mangadex.org, is rated low-risk by independent scanners, and reviewers report few of the pop-ups and fake download buttons common on other manga sites. But “low-risk” isn’t “licensed” and it isn’t “risk-free.” MangaDex mainly hosts unofficial fan translations (scanlations), it has been hit by large copyright takedowns, fake MangaDex clones and “MangaDex app” downloads are common, and it has no official mobile app that we could find.

Key facts

  • MangaDex is a nonprofit site that hosts fan-translated manga, manhwa and manhua. Registration is optional.
  • Scanners such as MalwareTips rate mangadex.org safe, but we haven’t tested it ourselves, and no manga site is guaranteed safe.
  • The official address is mangadex.org. Lookalike domains and “MangaDex app” download sites aren’t MangaDex.
  • Most of its catalog is unlicensed. About 7,000 titles were hit by DMCA takedowns in 2025, and MangaDex later registered as a UK company with legal support.
  • The safest way to read legally is an official service such as MANGA Plus, Shonen Jump, K MANGA or your library’s Hoopla or Libby.

Last updated October 28, 2026. This guide is based on public reports and third-party scanner results, not our own long-term testing of the site. It is general information, not legal advice.

What Is MangaDex?

MangaDex launched in 2018 and describes itself as a nonprofit site that aggregates translations of manga, manhwa and manhua. Most of what’s on it is uploaded by “scanlation” groups: fans who scan, translate and edit comics. Its own rules ban uploading official translations. Readers can browse without an account, and you can sign up optionally to follow series and keep a library.

The site is hugely popular. “MangaDex” alone is searched about 677,000 times a month in the US, and related searches include “mangadex org,” “mangadex app,” “mangadex download,” “mangadex alternative” and “is mangadex down.” Those searches tell you what readers worry about, and we answer each one below.

Is MangaDex Safe for Your Device?

For the official site, the evidence is reassuring but not a guarantee:

  • Scanner ratings. MalwareTips’ scan rated mangadex.org “safe” (85 out of 100), and Scamadviser has described it as very likely safe.
  • Ads. MangaDex has historically avoided ad networks and relied on donations, as TorrentFreak and Wikipedia have reported. We couldn’t verify its current ad behavior, so keep an ad blocker on.
  • No widely reported malware. The reviews we checked report no major malware or phishing incidents on the official site. That’s not proof that none will ever happen.

The bigger risks are usually around the site, not on it: fake clones, third-party apps, “download” buttons and sites that copy its name. A security scanner flagged one lookalike clone of another manga site as dangerous because of fake video players, fake “codec” download buttons and notification-spam traps. That’s the kind of thing to watch for.

Is mangadex.org the Official Site? How to Spot Fake MangaDex Sites

Yes, mangadex.org is the long-standing official address. MangaDex has had to change domains before, so copycats appear whenever people search for a new address. Use this checklist:

  • Type mangadex.org yourself, or use a bookmark. Don’t trust ads and search results that promise a “new MangaDex link.”
  • Look for spelling tricks, extra words or odd endings, such as “mangadex” plus “app,” “free,” “official” or a different ending.
  • Be wary of any page that asks you to install an app, extension or “player,” or to “allow notifications.”
  • Never enter a card number. MangaDex is free, so a site asking for payment to “unlock” chapters isn’t it. See our guide to financial data security.
  • Don’t reuse an important password on any manga site. A password manager makes that easy.

MangaDex isn’t a licensed service. Its catalog is largely unofficial translations uploaded without publisher permission, and it has faced legal pressure for years:

  • 2019 to 2020. After a copyright subpoena, the site went down for days and returned on a temporary domain, according to TorrentFreak.
  • 2021. Italy’s communications regulator stopped MangaDex from operating in Italy after a complaint from the Italian publishers’ association.
  • 2025. A wave of takedown notices hit about 7,000 titles, and MangaDex said it wasn’t shutting down. A UK platform, NamiComi, began providing legal support.
  • 2026. MangaDex registered as a UK company with management support from NamiComi, after the takedowns removed many popular series.

None of this means MangaDex became a fully licensed catalog. For readers, the law differs by country, and publishers mostly target sites, not individual readers. That’s not a guarantee. If you’re unsure, read officially, and ask a lawyer if you need advice for your situation.

Is MangaDex Down? Why It Goes Offline

People search “is mangadex down” because the site has had outages. Common reasons include copyright takedowns and mass removals, host or domain changes, high traffic, and blocks by some internet providers or countries. If it’s down:

  • Check MangaDex’s official announcements and community channels, not random “status” sites.
  • Don’t follow a link to a “mirror” or “new domain” from a stranger.
  • Try again later, or use a legal service for the series you want.

Does MangaDex Have an App?

As far as we can find, MangaDex has no official app on Google Play or the Apple App Store. You read it in a browser. Many results for “mangadex app” are one of three things: a third-party reader, a lookalike website that calls itself “MangaDexApp,” or a Tachiyomi-style Android reader such as Mihon that you add sources to. Those aren’t made by MangaDex.

The risk: third-party apps are often installed as APK files from outside your app store, and they can include adware or spyware, or simply stop working. If you use one, get it only from its official project page, check what permissions it asks for, and keep your phone updated. See our guides on Android vs iPhone security and software updates. On iPhone, the safer choice is the mobile website.

MangaDex Download: Is It Safe?

Searches for “mangadex download” usually lead to downloader tools, browser extensions and “offline reader” apps. They’re a common way malware spreads on manga sites. Treat any program you’re asked to install as unsafe unless you can confirm who made it. The safest offline option is an official app that supports downloads, such as Shonen Jump.

Is MangaDex Safe for Kids?

Like most manga sites, MangaDex hosts mature content as well as family-friendly series, and it’s a user-uploaded site, so parents should use caution. Use the site’s content filters, set controls on the device, and consider official apps for younger readers. Our guide to free parental control apps can help.

Do You Need a VPN or an Ad Blocker for MangaDex?

An ad blocker is a good idea on any free, user-uploaded site. A VPN hides your IP address and encrypts your connection on public Wi-Fi, but it doesn’t make a risky download safe and it doesn’t change the law. See what each tool does in our guide to proxy vs VPN.

How to Use MangaDex More Safely

  1. Go to mangadex.org directly, and bookmark it.
  2. Use an ad blocker and keep your browser updated.
  3. Don’t install apps, extensions or “players” the site or a clone asks for.
  4. Don’t enter a card, and use a unique password if you create an account.
  5. Ignore “you’ve won” banners, “virus detected” pop-ups and notification prompts.
  6. Read the site’s privacy policy before you sign up.
  7. Prefer official releases when a series is available legally. MangaDex itself links to official sources for many titles.

Is MangaDex Safe? FAQ

Is MangaDex safe to use?

The official site, mangadex.org, is rated low-risk by independent scanners. The bigger dangers are fake clones, third-party apps and downloads. Use an ad blocker, install nothing and don’t enter payment details.

It’s a nonprofit site, but most of its content is unlicensed fan translation, and it has faced takedowns and legal pressure. Laws differ by country, so use official sources if you want to stay clearly within the law.

Is MangaDex down?

It sometimes goes offline because of takedowns, host or domain changes, traffic or blocks. Check its official announcements and avoid mirror sites.

Is MangaDex shutting down?

MangaDex said it wasn’t shutting down after the 2025 takedowns, and it later registered as a UK company with legal support. Its catalog has shrunk, and its future isn’t guaranteed.

Does MangaDex have an official app?

We couldn’t find an official MangaDex app. Apps and sites that use the name are third-party, so be careful with them.

Can you get a virus from MangaDex?

We found no major malware reports for the official site. You can still pick up malware from fake clones, pop-ups, extensions and downloads that copy its name.

Is MangaDex.org the real MangaDex?

Yes. mangadex.org is its long-standing official address. Be wary of any other address.

Is MangaDex safe for kids?

It hosts mature content and user uploads, so it’s better for older readers. Use filters and parental controls, or choose official apps.

Do I need a VPN for MangaDex?

No. A VPN adds privacy on public networks but doesn’t protect you from malicious downloads or change the legal status of the content.

Bottom Line

Is MangaDex safe? The official site looks low-risk, but it’s an unlicensed, volunteer-run site under legal pressure, and most trouble comes from fake copies and third-party apps. If you use it, go to mangadex.org directly, block ads, install nothing and keep your payment details out of it. If you want stable, legal and safe reading, start with the official apps above.
